Artist Bio

safety scissors is an alternative rock group from Chicago, IL with members Madeline Farr (vocals and guitar, she/her), Judy Lawrence (vocals and guitar, she/her), Hope McKnight (bass guitar, she/her) and Anika Wilsnack (drums, she/her). The four women first met as college students and founded safety scissors in 2022, developing their unique style in basements and living rooms before the recording and release of their first demo EP, ‘Dull’ in 2024. The members now live and record in Chicago. Their debut album, ‘Oration on the Dignity of Woman’ was released on April 4, 2026.

The band’s music is reminiscent of late ’90s alternative while combining modern indie vocal styles and arrangement techniques. Check out “Iscariot” to hear the ominous fuzzy guitar and bass come together with flute, cello and violin for a heroic soaring build. safety scissors writes intentionally with an intellectual slant that carries themes throughout the album, connecting each song to an overarching cohesive message. The title track, inspired by the 1486 piece written by Italian essayist Pico della Mirandola begins with the line, “I am not a rational creature.” Deeply thematic messaging urges the listener to challenge the relationship between oneself, the natural world, and the divine. safety scissors’ strong musical motifs and impassioned lyricism speak to the lived experiences of queer women in navigating love, sexuality, and religion.
